The reason Canadian intellectuals like Professor Jordan Peterson and myself, sometime-professor William Baptiste, have been forced to boldly stand up for Free Speech and genuine Human Rights is because in recent years Canada and some of her provinces have become “world leaders” in a worldwide trend of now-accelerating “Creeping Totalitarianism” undermining Free Democracy and Human Rights from their very foundations. Most Western nations have for around 50 years now been abandoning the Traditional Western Values which include and support what I have identified from History, Science and Logic as The Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy – like equal human preciousness without exception which governments are obligated to protect; and the necessity that humans be FREE from all government coercion in matters of belief/thought/religion/speech, in order that they may freely seek, hear and find the truth about human existence which grounds Democracy: that humans are equally precious (meaning humans have an Inherent Human Right to Live and meaning killing humans is wrong).
 

Jordan Peterson oozes thoughtfulness and rigorous intellectual honesty from his pores, and millions respond to him because they are not used to seeing that anymore - not even from university professors, and certainly not from politicians who affect their freedom. The intellectually dishonest hate him because he exposes their foolishness or their selfish evil or their unwittingly-totalitarian orientation. Those that hate Jordan Peterson hate him because his example exposes their utter lack of his thoughtfulness and rigorous intellectual honesty.
 

If my fellow Canadian intellectual Professor Jordan Peterson is the world’s informal “Professor of Free Speech,” out-of-the-classroom teaching the world about Free Speech and pointing out today’s unacceptable governmental compromises of it (and modelling rigorous intellectual honesty while doing so), then perhaps William Baptiste is the world’s informal “Professor of Human Rights.” Out-of-the-classroom teaching the world about Human Rights - right from their historical and logical foundations (I was professor of a university course covering the period in which these foundations were laid; and I have taught Logic) - and teaching about today’s unacceptable and uneducated governmental compromises of Human Rights which have precisely and logically led to increasing governmental compromises of Free Speech as well (those which made Professor Peterson famous, and more - I can be arrested and jailed in some Canadian provinces for speaking the above Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy in support of Equal Human Rights for All Humans). Western governments like Canada’s have been passing undemocratic, totalitarian-oriented laws and policies specifically in order to shut down any intelligent or factual, logical, scientific, honest discussion or debate about current governmental policies, policies which include some Human Rights abuses, and which now include the suppression of Free Speech in order to better cover up Human Rights abuses (and in order to teach newfangled unscientific ideologies without intelligent and educated people being free to object. Totalitarian-oriented governments always try to shut up the intelligentsia early on).

It is completely unacceptable that people can actually be arrested and jailed under current laws in my country for speaking verifiable scientific facts which do not support current government policies which ignore Science. It is completely unacceptable that in two Canadian provinces [News Flash Update: Now three, more details below], peaceful, highly educated and intelligent Pro-Life Human Rights Advocates including myself can be arrested and jailed just for saying “killing humans is wrong because Human Rights are for all humans” or for speaking scientific and medical facts about abortion anywhere remotely near where such Human Rights advocacy is most pertinent (because human lives are being legally killed there). The police in Canada’s capital even made it clear to local peaceful Pro-Life Human Rights Advocates that they can be arrested just for “staring” at an abortion clinic where humans are killed, because that will be taken as a sign of “disapproval of abortion” which it is now illegal to show anywhere within up to 150 meters (500 feet) of an abortion facility anywhere within Canada’s most populous province. So, you can literally be arrested in Canada’s capital for looking the wrong way. Laws such as these, which take away normal democratic freedoms of assembly, speech, expression, conscience and religion of peaceful people who believe killing humans is wrong because Human Rights are for all humans (not just some humans), have no place in any healthy free democracy in the first place. So, it is not too surprising that governments and police which have so little understanding of how to tell the difference between totalitarianism and democracy in the first place would arrest people for not even breaking the law. It is the politics of intimidation, pure and simple – in my country you can be arrested just for being a “known Pro-Lifer” protesting that you are supposed to have Free Speech in your supposedly democratic country! 

In 2018, I actually gave a eulogy at the funeral of an elderly peaceful Human Rights Advocate who died while awaiting unjust trial, after having been arrested twice just for being “a known Pro-Lifer” carrying signs reading “FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND RELIGION. NO CENSORSHIP” and “GOD SAVE OUR CHARTER RIGHTS.” Another elderly Pro-Lifer (and retired priest) was later arrested for being a “known Pro-Lifer” carrying a sign reading “THE PRIMACY OF FREE SPEECH: CORNERSTONE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION.” The authorities sent the message loud and clear to Pro-Lifers province-wide: “SHUT UP, and don’t even SHOW UP, because we are willing to arrest ‘known Pro-Lifers’ whether or not they break the new law against speaking or in any way expressing their Pro-Life views.” [for more on this case click on this link to “2 Critical Human Rights Anniversaries in 2018;” and click on this link to Fact 5 of The TOP 6 FACTS]

The only reason there have not been more arrests than there have been, is because most Pro-Lifers are serious Christians, and most serious Christians are good, law-abiding citizens – so they have been abiding by the anti-democratic restrictions on their normal democratic freedoms, and holding their peaceful “40 Days for Life” silent prayer vigils and doing other peaceful Pro-Life Human Rights advocacy farther and farther away from legal human-killing abortion facilities where it is most pertinent to stand up for Equal Human Rights for All Humans.

What is most disturbing about this is that peaceful Pro-Life Human Rights advocates are giving up their normal democratic freedoms to peacefully protest the legal killing of innocent human lives across the street from abortion facilities out of fear of being arrested by police for their peaceful Human Rights advocacy. They are fearing something which should only happen in totalitarian Police-States which do not believe in the traditional Western maxim killing humans is wrong. 

What is also very disturbing about this is that it took only 3 weeks from the time this totalitarian-oriented bill was introduced into the regional (provincial) legislature for it to be passed into law (on the trumped-up excuse that it was “needed” to provide “safe access” to abortion clinics, though the government could not provide even one clear example of someone being harassed by Pro-Lifers, and a later request for police records confirmed that there was no such need) [News Flash Update: Another Canadian Province has set a new record for taking away normal democratic freedoms of Pro-Life Canadians who believe in Equal Human Rights for All Humans, introducing a new totalitarian bill against Free Speech and passing it into law in only 8 days. More details below].

It is also very disturbing that only a half-hour after it [the first such law] was passed into law, police arrived on the scene to break up a “40 Days for Life” peaceful silent prayer vigil across the street from the capital’s abortion clinic, telling the gathered Christians that they no longer had the freedom to pray for legal recognition of the sacredness of human life on that public street mere blocks away from the national government buildings. Shortly after it happened, I spoke on the phone with the organizer of the prayer event, who had just cancelled the “40 Days for Life” silent prayer vigil about 10 days early for fear of arrest by police for silently praying. The law sets penalties of jail time or heavy fine for any kind of Pro-Life expression. My own local Christian church community also for fear of arrest by police for silently praying decided to pray for legal recognition of the value of human life in our private church building instead of publicly across the street from the Morgentaler Abortion Clinic on the day we had scheduled to support the “40 Days for Life.” Our Freedoms of Assembly, Speech and Expression were taken away anywhere remotely near a human-killing abortion clinic within blocks of Canada's federal Parliament buildings where our supposed democracy is governed. The provincial government effectively cancelled our October 30 church community event by on October 25, 2017 declaring our peaceful silent prayer for human life on that public street illegal. Democracy cannot last wherever Christians are forced to huddle in churches to pray instead of exercising normal legitimate democratic freedoms to prayerfully and peacefully protest the killing of human lives.  

Also very disturbing: since this highly totalitarian law against free speech in support of Human Rights for all humans was passed, in short order another Canadian province (Alberta), also then governed by an “officially Pro-Choice” political party in power (the NDP, which apparently means “the Non-Democratic Party”), copied this anti-democratic law, also swiftly passing it in the legislature (I am here teasing the NDP in the hopes they will start to think and learn. Any Member of the provincial or federal NDP who thinks my teasingly referring to them as the “Non-Democratic Party” is unfair is invited to take THE INTELLECTUAL HONESTY CHALLENGE. I look forward to reading them try to explain intelligently and honestly, if they can, just why they think they are even competent to govern a LASTING democracy, when for much longer than any other Canadian political party they have not allowed in their Party anyone who actually believes in The Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy, which are fundamentally Pro-Life. As a Canadian, this author greatly respects Tommy Douglas, the founding leader of the NDP in 1961, who introduced Canada’s famous Medicare – but the NDP he founded has since become a Pro-Choice Extremist Left so grossly uneducated in Human Rights History that they do not even realize how extremist they are). Yet another totalitarian law like this failed to pass in the Province of Manitoba only because the officially Pro-Choice political party of the Member that introduced the bill (yes, another NDP “Non-Democratic Party” Member) was not in power (and so it was voted down by truly democratic and intelligent politicians who realized that: 

1) the “harassment” used as the excuse for such a bill did not even exist (because most Pro-Lifers are such because they love all humans without exception, including mothers tempted to abort their babies and including the abortionists themselves);

2) existing laws against assault etc. already fully cover any theoretical case where a protester at an abortion facility gets out of hand; 

3) and so the law’s only actual purpose was the totalitarian purpose of curbing Pro-Life free speech about the Human Rights for All Humans Debate (the Abortion Debate), a debate which Pro-Choice politicians simply cannot win on any intelligent or honest grounds, as this author's books prove, which is why Pro-Choice politicians instead submit bills against Free Speech for their Pro-Life opponents.

Remember this author is thoroughly non-partisan, as described in detail on the Politics and Democracy webpage, and simply calls all political parties worldwide to get back to their party’s roots if they have strayed – the NDP (which actually stands for “New Democratic Party”) and the Liberal Party of Canada from their inception were not so staunchly and officially against the “Pro-Life” Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy as they have become in recent years. This author’s teasing hopes to encourage in Canadian Liberals and New Democrats some much-needed deep thoughtfulness and thinking things through from democratic First Principles to sound conclusions, before they completely destroy the foundations of Canada’s Free Democracy just because they do not know any better. This is also a warning that they have to purge their political parties of all traces of today’s current Pro-Choice ‘Creeping Totalitarianism’ if they want Human-Rights-Educated intelligent and honest voters to vote for them. There will be more and more of such voters as this solid Human Rights Education spreads. A little deep and logical thinking never hurt anybody, and Pro-Choice Progressives should try it (yes, I am still teasing to encourage them to learn) – so they can finally realize that in the light of Human Rights History, a “Pro-Choice Left” is not a “real Left” but obviously an extremist Left, literally following the precedent of the extremist political parties of both Left and Right (the Soviets and Nazis) which were the first modern political parties to de-criminalize human-killing by abortion – “Pro-Choice” legal abortion and totalitarian government having naturally and logically gone hand-in-hand throughout human history (see the TOP 6 FACTS of Human Rights History Which Prove Pro-Life = Pro-Democracy and Pro-Choice = Pro-Totalitarianism).

[News Flash Update March 2020: Canada's Pro-Choice Extremist Left has not yet learned their lesson. Instead, they have set a new record for how fast they can take away normal democratic freedoms from Pro-Life Canadians who (unlike them) actually believe in The Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy. An NDP MLA in yet another province (Nova Scotia) submitted a totalitarian bill March 2 which was passed into (totalitarian) law by the Liberal Government on March 10. So another province in my country has introduced and passed a similar law forbidding Free Speech on behalf of Equal Human Rights for All Humans where such Human Rights advocacy is most pertinent, this time in only 8 days, from March 2-10, 2020.]

U.S. Democrat Eleanor Roosevelt (widow of Democrat President FDR) represented the “real Left” – in 1948 she led the original United Nations Human Rights Commission and directed the production of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which asserted every human “without distinction of any kind” has “inherent . . . equal and inalienable [human] rights,” clarifying that “recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.” Of course, there is no intelligent nor intellectually honest way to interpret the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as allowing for legal human-killing by abortion. In fact, in the same year the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights was produced, the “Free West” also condemned the anti-human oppressive totalitarian Nazi practices of legal human-killing abortion (and legal human-killing euthanasia), calling legal abortion “a crime against humanity” at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. The 1948 Declaration of Geneva, in response to the Nazis de-criminalizing both human-killing abortion and human-killing euthanasia in violation of the 2500-year Hippocratic Medical Tradition that doctors do not kill patients, similarly reaffirmed the Hippocratic Oath Tradition in the doctor’s promise, “I will maintain the utmost respect for human life, from the time of conception; even under threat, I will not use my medical knowledge contrary to the laws of humanity.” After the Nazi horrors of World War II, which included Nazi Germany being the first country to legalize human-killing by both abortion and euthanasia, the “Free West” knew with more clarity than ever before that without exception killing humans is wrong and at last clarified in great detail basic Human Rights for all humans, including the Inherent Human Right to Live without which all other rights are meaningless. Every single time in history that a group of humans’ biological humanity has been acknowledged, but their attendant human personhood and equal Human Rights denied, it has been a grave injustice. This injustice has been perpetrated upon Black humans, Jewish humans, Aboriginal/Native humans, disabled/handicapped humans, female humans, and young preborn humans still in the womb. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, under the direction of a magnificent representative of the “real Left,” intended to put an end to all Human Rights abuses, proclaiming without equivocation that “recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.” Unfortunately, today’s Pro-Choice legal human-killing abortion Extremist Left has somehow forgotten or never learned about what great strides towards genuine Human Rights for all humans were made by the “real Left” back in the 1940s, to the great benefit of all humans of all political persuasions.  

Just the fact that people in the supposedly "Free West" now speak of legal human-killing abortion as a matter of “politics” is proof that (like in pre-war Europe) the West has already lost its Democratic Soul and is in grave danger of slipping into totalitarianism. In Europe before World War II it was similarly considered a matter of “politics” whether Jewish humans (and disabled/handicapped humans) had equal rights and value with other humans or not. Those whose “politics” did not think all humans were equal, but that Jewish humans were somehow “less than human” or “of less value,” when in political power legally devalued and killed Jewish humans in the millions. And also killed disabled/handicapped humans with various disorders.  After first de-criminalizing human-killing by abortion (and euthanasia), all because they did not believe in democracy-grounding equal human preciousness nor any Inherent Human Right to Live. Then they also arrested anyone who would speak up for those humans they had legally devalued and killed, eliminating Free Speech in the German democracy. A democracy which, of course, could not and did not last, because it was not properly grounded in The Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy and was not mindful of The Core Principles of Lasting Democracy articulated in this author’s Pledge of Allegiance to Democracy.

Today the same kind of thinking also calls it “politics” whether preborn, fetal-age humans have equal rights and value with other humans or not. The same kind of bigoted thinking offers to “assist the suicide of” (that is, kill) those with disabilities and disorders whose human lives they think are “of less value,” “a burden,” and so “not worth living.” As in pre-war Europe, those today whose “politics” similarly do not think all humans are equal, but that preborn, fetal-age humans are somehow “less than human” or “of less value,” when in power have similarly legally devalued and killed preborn humans in the millions. Because they too do not believe in The Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy like equal human preciousness nor any Inherent Human Right to Live. Like the Nazis who also legally devalued and killed in the millions an entire category of humans, Pro-Choicers in political power are now also taking away the Free Speech of those who would speak up for those humans who have been legally devalued and killed.  No-one can get away with legally killing humans for long without also having to end the Free Speech of those who object to the legal killing of humans because they believe the traditional democracy-grounding Western maxim killing humans is wrong. Thus, this Human Rights Education author and other peaceful Pro-Life Human Rights Advocates can be arrested and jailed in some Canadian provinces – and in the national capital - for speaking up against the killing of legally devalued humans anywhere near where this human-killing is happening.

The Intellectual Honesty Challenge means today’s NDP (and all Pro-Choice political parties worldwide) are challenged to write an intelligent and intellectually honest response to the charge that all officially Pro-Choice political parties like theirs are inherently extremist political parties; the Intellectual Honesty Challenge means today’s NDP (etc.) is challenged to intelligently defend their aggressively Pro-Choice position if they can and send it to HonestyChallenge@WilliamBaptisteHumanRightsAndFreedomsForever.com to continue the necessary rational national dialogue on the Human Rights for All Humans Debate (the Abortion Debate); and if they cannot, they are challenged to concede that Pro-Life = Pro-Democracy (and Pro-Choice = Pro-Totalitarianism), as intellectual honesty demands, and change their stance so that their party can become part of the solution to today’s Pro-Choice ‘Creeping Totalitarianism’ instead of part of the problem (note that to not take THE INTELLECTUAL HONESTY CHALLENGE is a tacit admission there is no intelligent case for legal abortion in a democracy).  All major political parties which are officially or de facto Pro-Choice political parties (like Canada’s Liberal Party or the U.S. Democrats) are similarly given The Intellectual Honesty Challenge in the hopes that there are genuinely honest intellects still in these parties who will be open to learning, spreading and implementing The Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy which at present are being actively destroyed and undermined by their Pro-Choice party policy. The anti-democratic effects of their Pro-Choice political leadership among average Canadians are further demonstrated below:

Unfortunately, encouraged by the now “Pro-Choice Extremist Left” Liberals and New Democrats passing the above No Pro-Life Free Speech laws in some Canadian provinces, certain local municipalities around Canada have since seen Pro-Choice attempts to shut down the free speech and free expression of Pro-Lifers in more and more places – wanting such “no-free-speech-bubble-zones” to silence the Pro-Lifers who disagree with them not only within blocks of abortion clinics, but also in residential areas. It is clear that Pro-Choice politicians and citizens in general do not hold the truly democratic sentiment, “though I disagree with what you say, I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Pro-Choice politicians and voters seem to be only to happy to shut down free speech about the central dispute of our time, the Human Rights for All Humans Debate (also known as the Abortion Debate), since they cannot win an intellectually honest and scientific, historical or rigorously logical argument about it. When shutting up those who disagree with their Pro-Choice position is not supported by such totalitarian laws and enforced by police, it is also common for Pro-Choicers to vandalize Pro-Life signs which invite intelligent dialogue about the Abortion Debate (the Human Rights for All Humans Debate). I myself had many signs on my lawn vandalized or stolen, even though they merely called attention to the fact that Canada has no laws about nor restricting abortion whatsoever, totalitarian North Korea being the only other country like this. In the USA, where officially Pro-Choice Political Parties are not currently in power [Update: when this article was written] to pass sweeping no-Pro-Life-free-speech laws like in Canada, instead of police being able to arrest Pro-Lifers to shut them up, they have grassroots intimidating “Antifa” groups terrorizing high-profile Pro-Lifers like Tucker Carlson in the attempt to shut down the Pro-Life voice in the public sphere. What else could you reasonably expect but totalitarian bullying from Pro-Choicers, who first copied the totalitarian Soviet and Nazi precedent of legal human-killing by abortion?

 
The rapid loss of normal democratic freedoms in the last few years in my country and worldwide (e.g. in France you can be arrested and jailed and heavily fined for making a Pro-Life Website loaded with scientific and medical facts about abortion) has motivated me to (since 2015) do a sustained scholarly reflection on just how our Western Civilization came to this point, where Free Speech and Human Rights for All Humans are seriously threatened; and just how we can get out of it and restore Free Democracy’s badly eroded foundations. Jordan Peterson has often referred to the fact that the notion of human equality is not immediately obvious (I would add that it is manifestly true that humans are not equal in physical or mental attributes, ability or disability), and that in the past Westerners assumed a basic equal human dignity and value based on the Christian idea humans are made “in the Image of God.” Of course, he is correct, and my work elucidates the history and the logic behind the Traditional Western (Judeo-Christian) Pro-Life Family Values which include and support The Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy.  

Canada and some of her provinces’ experience as “world leaders” in “Creeping Totalitarianism” no longer just “creeping” since 2015, which thrust Jordan Peterson onto the world stage, recalls this warning from Canada’s first Prime Minister:

“If I had influence over the minds of the people of Canada, any power over their intellect, I would leave them this legacy: Whatever you do adhere to the Union – we are a great country, and shall become one of the greatest in the universe if we preserve it; we shall sink into insignificance and adversity if we suffer it to be broken.”

What Sir John A. wrote about Canada’s Union surely also applies to the founding Traditional Western Values underlying that Union, which all Western Human Rights and democratic freedoms, including Canada’s, are built on. We have failed to preserve our country’s adherence to the traditional Western Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy which are included in and supported by Traditional Western Values, and so our democracy today is broken. So broken it no longer has Free Speech and people can be arrested in Canada (or some of her provinces) for saying “killing humans is wrong” or for speaking scientifically verifiable facts which go against unscientific government policies; or just for being a “known” Pro-Life Human Rights Advocate “staring” at a human-killing abortion clinic within blocks of our national Parliament. Our Canadian democracy is so broken that in our last federal election (2019) no major political party stood up for The Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy against so very many totalitarian-oriented laws and policies passed at the federal and provincial levels since 2015, laws and policies which (totalitarian-style) put the government in between parents and their own children; which (totalitarian-style) teach impressionable schoolchildren new-fangled values with no history in the culture and pseudo-scientific party ideology with no grounding in real science. Laws and policies which (totalitarian-style) take away from Canadian citizens (and doctors) normal democratic freedoms of speech, expression, assembly, conscience and religion. 

There is a great hope in all of this. There is actually hope from out of Canada’s failure to maintain its Free Democracy (and Democracy’s foundations). Canada’s failure has forced Canadian intellectuals like Professor Jordan Peterson and myself to elucidate and stand up for Free Democracy’s traditional, historical and logical foundations (and try to re-acquaint people with thoughtful, intellectually honest, logical thinking which thinks things through from First Principles to sound conclusions, and avoids logical fallacies of reasoning). So perhaps Canada can indeed become “one of the greatest [countries] in the universe,” as Prime Minister John A. MacDonald predicted it could. By helping the entire Free West learn to maintain its Free Democracies from all attack for the next centuries, by explicitly shoring up in Western nations the badly eroded implicit traditional Foundational Principles of Human Rights and Democracy and thus ending current “Creeping Totalitarianism.” 

Until then, it seems that most people - and most politicians - are not aware enough of History (nor of Logic) to see their place in the flow of Living History, and the dreadful and dangerous significance of current events. But that is what well-read deep-thinking scholars like Professor Jordan Peterson and myself are here for – to make sure people know the significance in Living History of what is happening right now. 

The flow of future Living History is conditioned and determined by the past and by our actions in the present. Our politicians and voters need to be making Human-Rights-educated actions and they need to stop making uneducated actions that are now progressing the West furiously towards the ultimate loss of Free Democracy in what for decades has been a slowly ‘Creeping Totalitarianism’ which is now rapidly accelerating. Accelerating to the point that Canadian provincial and national governments (and other governments worldwide) – without knowing any better – have already passed totalitarian-oriented laws and policies against Freedom of Speech; against Freedom of Expression; against Freedom of Assembly; against Freedom of Conscience and Religion. Current laws and policies under which I or Professor Peterson or any conscientious Human Rights advocates (including real doctors who do not kill) can be disciplined or fired or fined or arrested and jailed merely for speaking logically sound statements utilizing well established or easily verifiable facts of Science or History such as those included in a solid Human Rights Education.
